John Odom, President of the Institute will be giving a presentation on campus to a group of education students who belong to the Education Fellows program. The event will take place Wednesday, January 31st from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Education Building on Bascom Hill. There is a lower level conference room where the group meets you will see it once you walk in to the main door. For that reason, students are expected to adhere to the following rules:

• Treat others with courtesy and respect
• Use titles when addressing adults
• Be punctual and regular in attendance
• Act responsibly and accept responsibility
• Use cellphones and other gadgets appropriately
• Use the Internet appropriately
• No fighting
• No use or possession of illegal substances
• No use of profanity or course language, including the word “nigger”

On January 15, the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute invited dozens of area school children to learn the words and understand the message of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Institute’s first Martin Luther King Day Read-in. At the event, kids sang happy birthday to Dr. King, learned about the nation’s struggle for equality, and even listened to a story about civil rights leaders read by Wisconsin’s first lady Jessica Doyle.

He was Harvard Law Review’s first black editor, Howard University’s dean of law. He was a father, a soldier, an attorney—the first black man to stand before the United States Supreme Court as a lawyer, instead of a defendant. He was chief council to the NAACP and a leading architect of the American civil rights movement. Charles Hamilton Houston was just one man, but his dedication to fighting racial inequality from within the legal system ended a century of “separate but equal” segregation. He was truly “the man who killed Jim Crow.” And he remains the inspiration behind our work.
